Gen 2 Volt could get 80 miles on batteries
Right now the official mileage on the batteries for the Volt is 40 and will remain that way for the next few years. However, a tech company in Ohio hopes that they can double that range to 80 miles for the second generation Volt. Applied Sciences Inc, located in Cederville is using carbon nanofibers to enhance the range of batteries.
“GM researchers say they have not seen any carbon materials that have performed as well as ours.”
So far Applied Sciences has received $500 thousand from GM to develope the batteries and another $1 million from the Ohio Third Frontier program. Though no one has received the award to be the battery supplier for GM right now things look pretty good for Applied Sciences to be in the future of the Volt.
